Come to explore Plaza Santa Ana. Hostal Bianco is your best choice. The square was originally the site of the Convent of Santa Ana, founded in 1586 but demolished in 1810 by Joseph I (Napóleon’s brother). In its place, the Plaza was created around 1848, and was almost completed in 1880.
On its east side, it may be found The Teatro Español whose origins go back to the 16th century and where the most important writers have seen their works acted out on stage. Two statutes in the square play tribute to great spanish personalities, Pedro Calderón de la Barca, a famous seventeenth-century playwright and Federico García Lorca, poet and dramatist killed during the Spanish Civil War.
Situated in the heart of a district called Huertas, The Plaza became a focal point for intellectual life, and the cafes surrounding the plaza was thronged with artist, writers and poets engaging in endless tertulias (literary and philosophical discussion). Nowadays, the Plaza is a delightful confluence of elegant architecture and irresistible energy, a perfect place to just sit and watch the passers-by or to take a refreshing drink at one of the open-air terrace cafes.
The Plaza is one of the city’s most vibrant blocks, a place where locals mingle easily with tourist, both sipping wine or taking a beer in the sunshine on the lively terraces and listening to street musicians. And if you are travelling with kids, a children’s playground is located in the Plaza, your children will have a great time while you relax sitting on a bench.
